White whole cowpeas belong to the legume family and are commonly known as black eyed peas'. In Hindi, they are known as lobhia' or chawli' in Hindi.

Black-eyed peas are a subspecies of cowpeas, which originated in the African continent. The cowpea's black-eyed variant gets its name from the black eye on its inner curve.

As a medium-sized edible bean with a distinctive flavour of its own it, the black eyed bean is grown in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and popularly consumed in many other parts of the world.

Compared to other legumes, black-eyed peas are not commonly consumed in India.
