Ajwain is a common spice found in kitchens across Indian and used in cooking Indian curries. It is also a favorite spice featured in Middle Eastern cuisine.

It is a tiny fruit pod that is pale green to brown in color and marked with vertical stripes on the outer surface. It has a hot, bitter taste and is rarely eaten raw. Ajwain is mostly sold in seed form; however, it can be powdered at home using a grinder.

Other common names for ajwain are bishops weed or carom seeds.

For years, Indian mothers and grandmothers have used ajwain as a home remedy for indigestion-related problems, especially stomachaches.
