Thyme, pronounced, "time, is a fragrant, small-leafed, woody-stemmed herb that is primarily used in Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. It is native to southern Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean region.

There are about sixty different varieties of thyme. The French type is the most common, and other varieties include orange thyme, silver thyme and lemon thyme.

In earlier days, thyme was used by ancient Greeks in their baths and as incense in the temples. It was also used as a preserving agent in Egypt. In the Middle Ages in Europe, thyme was regarded, as a symbol of courage and women would gift it to warriors and knights. Romans are known to have spread this herb in Europe by using it to purify their rooms wherever they went.

Thyme is an herb with culinary, medical and ornamental uses.
