Split black gram with skin is commonly referred to as chhilke wala urad dal in India. It is made by splitting black gram (whole urad dal) without removing its coat.
While black gram cultivation and consumption was traditionally confined to the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, it is now ranked among the most commonly consumed pulses across India and Pakistan.
Upon cooking, black gram develops a sticky texture and a bland and earthy flavour.
