Stevia is a green, leafy plant native to South America. It is about 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar but has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients.
Stevia leaves have been traditionally used for over 1500 years in Brazil and Paraguay to sweeten local medicines and drinks. Other countries that have a history of using stevia include China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, and Malaysia.
Today, stevia plays an active role in the sugar substitute market.
Research has shown that not everyone likes the taste of stevias sweetness. Some find it bitter while others think it tastes like menthol. However, try adding it to your morning coffee or sprinkling it over your breakfast porridge to see if you like the taste.
