Fennel seeds are known as "saunf in India. In most Indian restaurants, it is served as an after-meal digestive and a mouth freshener with some mint.

Fennel seeds are dried seeds of the perennial Fennel herb plant that belongs to the parsley family. They are native to Southern Europe but are now grown extensively all over Europe, the Middle East, China, India, and Turkey. Currently, India is the largest producer of Fennel seeds.

These seeds resemble cumin seeds but are greener in colour. They have a sweet taste and a warm flavour. These seeds can be used as spice, either ground or whole. They appear in Indian, Asian, and Middle Eastern cooking.

Fennel seeds are believed to be a digestive aid. They are used to make tea and capsules in India and Pakistan. Interestingly, fennel water is given to new-born babies to relieve colic pain and help aid digestion.
