"Quinoa" pronounced, as "KEEN-wah" is an ancient grain. The history of quinoa dates back almost 3000- 4000 years ago and is rooted in the Andes region in South America.
Quinoa is not a true cereal grain like wheat, oats, barley, but it is still grouped with them because it has been used in the same way as 'true cereal' has been. Therefore, it is known as a 'pseudo-cereal'. Botanically, quinoa belongs to the same family as beets, chard and spinach, and its leaves, as well as the grains, can be eaten.
There are over 120 varieties of quinoa. The most commonly cultivated and consumed ones are white (also known as ivory or yellow) quinoa, red quinoa and black quinoa.
