Rock salt is known as sendha namak in Hindi. The other common name for it is halite. It was first discovered in 1844 in England, where local prospectors were originally searching for coal.
Rock salt is a naturally occurring rock formed by the evaporation of salty water. In the geological past, large bodies of water evaporated and formed enormous deposits of rock salt. Therefore, rock salt is found all over the world in the form of deposits ringing dry lake beds, inland marginal seas, enclosed bays and estuaries in the arid regions of the world.
Rock salt is the purest form of salt, as it is devoid of environmental pollutants and chemical components.
It is different from the regular table salt because it is a rock rather than a mineral and it is naturally found in a solid form. Unlike regular salt, which is iodized, rock salt is more granular with large chunky crystals and is not chemically processed.
