Chickpeas are commonly known askabuli chana or chhola in India and as garbanzo beans in other parts of the world. As the namekabuli chana suggests, chickpeas are thought to have been introduced into India via Kabul, Afghanistan.
The chickpea is a member of the legume family and is irregular and round and slightly larger than peas in size. It is known to be a versatile legume because it has a slight flavour and can be mixed with any other ingredient or spice.
Historically, chickpeas originated in the Middle East, where it is still a common ingredient in dishes like hummus and falafel. Its nutty taste and buttery texture also made it popular amongst the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Around the 16th century, Spanish and Portuguese explorers spread the love of this legume to other subtropical regions like India and Ethiopia.
Today the largest producers of chickpeas are Turkey, India, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Mexico.
