Previously shunned by wellness and health communities, coconut oil is now becoming an attractive addition to every health food list. Coconut oil has seen significant increase in consumption in recent years and is still growing in popularity. While it was earlier dismissed as a source of saturated fats, coconut oil is now gaining recognition as "functional food" with medical and nutritional benefits long recognised by traditional cultures.
Organic coconut oil is extracted from the meat (also known as kernel) of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm.
There are two kinds of coconut oil: refined and unrefined. Unrefined coconut oil (also known as virgin coconut oil) is made from fresh coconut meat and has a light coconut taste and aroma. Refined coconut oil is a cheaper variety of coconut oil which is made from dried copra (i.e. not fresh coconut) and has undergone various levels of processing, including bleaching. Given the additive content of its refined variant, it is therefore recommended always to purchase virgin or unrefined coconut oil.
Virgin coconut oil is extracted in a few different ways, ?cold press? method being the most common one. In this process, the fresh coconut meat is mechanically pressed to extract the oil without the use of any external heat. The temperature during the extraction process is maintained below 49 degrees Celsius because the high pressure generates heat naturally. Pure cold-pressed coconut oil is not refined, bleached, or deodorized and is excellent for human consumption.
The flavour and aroma of cold pressed virgin coconut oil differ from brand to brand depending on the kind of coconut meat used. Some brands have a gentle and barely noticeable flavour while a stronger coconut taste characterizes others.
Organic cold pressed coconut oil offers a rich coconut flavour and contains the high nutrient content of raw coconut meat.
Organic coconut oil is extensively used and produced in tropical countries, including Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and India.

Health benefits
- Promotes heart health ? coconut oil's essential fat is 50% lauric acid that actively prevents heart problems caused by high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It increases the levels of good cholesterol in the body, thus reducing the chances of injury and damage to the arteries.
- Good for weight loss ? Coconut oil contains short and medium chain fatty acids that increase the body's metabolic rate and promote fat loss.
- Improves digestive system ? the saturated fats in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties that help fight bacteria, fungi and parasites that cause digestive ailments such as irritable bowel syndrome.
- Promotes absorption of nutrients ? coconut oil helps the body absorb nutrients ? vitamins and minerals alike ? derived from other food sources.
- Anti-microbial properties ? unlike antibiotics, lauric acid in coconut oil acts as a powerful antimicrobial that destroys harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites without destroying the good ones. Coconut oil thus helps boost the immune system by maintaining the body?s healthy natural flora.
- Skincare ? coconut oil improves skin moisture. It prevents dryness and flaking of skin. It's moisturising and antifungal properties help to treat skin problems like psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema. For this reason, coconut oil is often used as a base ingredient in many skin care products like soaps, lotions and creams.
- Hair care ? it promotes hair growth and makes the hair shiny and lustrous
- Neurocare ? Some studies have also shown that the fatty acids in coconut oil improve brain function in patients with mild forms of Alzheimer
