Chitra Rajma is a type of kidney bean that grows on the foothills of the Himalayas and is popularly consumed in North India. It gets its name chitra' because of the intricate shade and design on these beans. In other parts of the world, it is commonly known as pinto bean'.

Kidney beans that originated in Peru from where it spread to other countries in Central and South America by migrating traders. The beans introduced to Europe in the 15^th century, when Spanish and Portuguese explorers were returning from their voyages to the New World, before subsequently spreading to Africa and Asia.

Kidney beans retain their shape well during cooking and absorb the flavour of spices.
