Split yellow pigeon peas are also commonly known as arhar dal or tur dal in India.

Tur dal originated in India, and now it is widely cultivated in the Indian subcontinent, Eastern Africa, and Central America. Its crop is easy to grow because it grows in low-nutrient soil and does not require a large amount of water.

Tur dal is a popular dal cooked in most Indian homes. It is also the main ingredient used to prepare the famous South Indian dish called sambar.
