Red Chilli powder (a.k.a lal mirch) is a spice that can set your tongue on fire and bring a tear to your eyes! It is made by grinding sun-dried whole red chilies.
Red chili powder adds zest to many different cuisines from around the world, like spicy Indian, hot Mexican, simmering Szechuan and hot Thai food.
The history of red chilies can be traced back to Central and Southern American regions, whose cuisines are renowned for their spicy flavours. In the 15th and 16th century, red chilies were introduced to Europe, where they were used as a cheaper substitute for black pepper. From there they went to Africa and Asia.
In India, the red chili pepper is primarily grown in Andhra Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
Most Indian savoury dishes are incomplete without a dash of red chili. Red chili powder is known to add pungency and flavour to otherwise bland food.
