Cashew nuts are kidney-shaped seeds that hang from the bottom of the cashew apple, which resembles a small pear and is the fruit of the cashew tree.
Cashew nuts get their name from the Portuguese word Kaju', which means the "nut that produces itself". This name is due to the unusual location of this nut (actually a seed) outside the core of the fruit.
Cashew trees are native to the coastal areas of northern Brazil, from where they spread to other tropical regions. It is now widely cultivated in India and African countries like Nigeria and Tanzania.
These nuts are a popular treat found in grocery and health food stores across the world. They are packed with nutrients and can be a part of a healthy diet.
